Plans to set up this department was initiated in 1989 when pharmacological and toxicological activities were then carried out in a general Research Laboratory. In 1991 the present department was established as a new laboratory, equipped with basic equipment for pharmacological and toxicological investigations. The department also has an Animal House which is capable of housing up to 5000 rats and 3000 mice.
Functions
- Safety and efficacy assessment of herbal preparations of CSRPM
and other herbal medicine manufacturers
- Undertaking other biochemical and pharmacological studies
relevant to the R&D of herbal medicines.
Activities
- Safety assessment studies currently conducted by the department
include acute, sub-chronic and chronic toxicity studies on herbal
preparations. These studies involve LD50 and margin of safety
determinations, biochemical, haematological assessments and rinalyses.
- Other safety studies carried out as part of the toxicity
assessment are, pathology, histopathology, teratogenicity reproductive
toxicity, dermal toxicity and drug interaction.
Studies on carcinogenicity and mutagenicity will begin shortly.
